What you are looking at
This is an index, not a marketplace. Each of the sixteen entries is a short piece of writing about a hotel that exists, takes bookings from the public, and does one thing that most hotels would consider a mistake.
The four categories are fixed and literal. They are the names of four kinds of hotel — art, capsule, casino, ice — and each property sits under exactly one of them. Nothing is ranked, because four hotels answering the same question differently cannot be put in order.
How each entry is written
One sentence
Every hotel in the index can be summed up by a single decision its owners made and then had to live with. If we cannot write that sentence, the hotel is not here.
The building first
We describe structure, scale, rooms and service. What a place looks like in a photograph is the easiest thing to find elsewhere, so it is the least of what we spend words on.
Durable facts only
No prices, no star ratings, no review scores, no opening hours. Those go stale quietly and take the rest of the page down with them.
Nobody pays
